You Wake Up. Now What?
Mornings can set the tone for the entire day. After researching the morning routines of 100+ high performers, I’ve experimented and honed in on five simple habits that help me kick-start my day. And here’s a little secret: I don’t always get all five done. But when I hit three out of five, I feel like I’ve won the morning—and as they say, “Win the morning, win the day.”
These rituals might seem small or easy to overlook, but sometimes, the smallest things can have the biggest impact.
1. Make Your Bed
It might sound trivial, but making your bed first thing in the morning is a game-changer. Naval Admiral William McRaven once said, “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and encourage you to do another task and another and another.” The simple act of making your bed reinforces the idea that little things matter. It sets a positive tone, creating momentum for the rest of the day.
2. Take a Shower
Now, I’m not implying anyone skips their showers—but there’s something uniquely invigorating about a morning rinse. Personally, I’ve worked up to taking cold showers, which leave me feeling refreshed and energized. But hey, if a warm or lukewarm shower is your preference, that’s great too! The goal is to start your day feeling rejuvenated, giving your mind and body a much-needed wake-up call.
3. Do 60 Seconds of Exercise
Ever find yourself pressed for time in the morning? That’s where a quick 60-second exercise burst comes in. A minute might not sound like much, but it can do wonders to wake up your body and quiet the mental chatter. Whether it’s a full-body stretch or a quick set of reps, the goal is to get moving. Everyone has 60 seconds, and this quick activity helps you feel more alert, boosts your mood, and sets the stage for an active day.
4. Prepare a Hot Cup of Something
Whether you’re a coffee aficionado or a tea enthusiast, starting your day with a hot beverage can feel like a morning ritual of its own. Take a moment to sip, savor, and reflect. The warmth of the drink is calming, and the routine is a great opportunity to pause, think, and set intentions for your day.
5. Journal for 5 Minutes
Journaling isn’t about penning down a “Dear Diary” entry. It’s about focusing your thoughts, setting priorities, and finding clarity for the day ahead. Spend just 5 minutes writing down a few prompts in the morning, then revisit your journal for 5 minutes in the evening. Reflect on your wins, challenges, and areas of gratitude. Over time, this consistent habit helps to clear mental fog, boost focus, and align your daily actions with your bigger goals.
The Power of Consistency in Your Morning Rituals
It’s easy to underestimate the impact of small habits. Yet, these morning rituals can transform your energy, productivity, and mood for the entire day. By simply committing to these manageable habits, you’ll not only feel more in control but also start each day with purpose.
And remember: progress is progress. If you hit just three of these five habits in the morning, you’re already setting yourself up for a successful day. Consistency, not perfection, is what counts.
