Control What You Can: The Secret to Progress in Fitness and Life

I come from the West of Ireland, where one of our favorite pastimes is—without a doubt—complaining about the weather. ☁️

We say things like:

  • “Will it ever stop raining?”
  • “It’s too windy.”
  • “It’s not windy enough.”
  • “It’s too cold.”
  • “It’s too hot” (okay, that one’s rare 😆)

But let me ask you something simple:

Have you ever tried to control the weather?

Of course not. Because it won’t make any difference. Nothing. Zero. You can’t yell at the clouds or negotiate with the rain. But that doesn’t stop most of us from letting a bad forecast ruin our mood—or worse, our workout.

The Power of Controlling the Controllables

Here’s the deal: Trying to control the uncontrollable only leads to mental frustration. It’s a recipe for wasted energy and stalled progress.

This is especially true in your fitness journey.

There are a lot of things you can’t control: traffic delays, work emergencies, airport lines, and yes—rainy days in Long Island City.

But here’s what you can control:

  • Your effort
  • Your attitude
  • Your consistency

That’s where the real progress lives.

You Don’t Need Perfect Conditions to Make Progress

One of the biggest mindset shifts we see in our members at The Trinity NYCthe best gym in Long Island City—is learning to let go of chasing perfection and instead embracing consistency.

It’s not about the “perfect day” to train. It’s about choosing to show up on imperfect days.

So next time life throws some rain your way—literally or figuratively—don’t cancel your goals. Don’t postpone your progress.

Grab your hoodie. Show up anyway. The magic is in the showing up.

Apply This to Life Outside the Gym Too

This mindset doesn’t stop at the gym door. Controlling the controllables applies to your relationships, your career, your mental health.

✅ You can’t control what other people do—but you can control your response.
✅ You can’t control external stress—but you can control how you care for your body.
✅ You can’t control the forecast—but you can get your steps in anyway.

Focus on what you can control, and let the rest go.
