Fitness coaching internships can be transformative — and I know that first-hand. Back in 2017, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life. I left my job in finance and went all in on coaching. At the time, I knew I wanted to help people through exercise and nutrition because I had experienced first-hand how much it had improved my own life. I felt better, had more confidence, more energy, and a greater sense of purpose. The challenge was that I had no idea where to start.
Thankfully, Eoghan O’Kelly took me under his wing and helped me get a fitness coaching internship at a gym in Chelsea called Titan Fitness. Looking back, I was incredibly fortunate. The coaching team there was outstanding and I had the opportunity to learn from some genuinely talented coaches. They taught me far more than how to write programs or coach exercises. They taught me how to connect with people, how to communicate clearly, and how to create an environment where people could thrive.
Fitness Coaching Internships: What Real Development Looks Like
I became known around the gym as the guy with the notebook. I carried it everywhere. I took notes after sessions, during meetings, with members, and whenever I saw something that would make me a better coach. I was obsessed with learning. I also remember how nervous I was coaching people for the first time — standing in front of a group, trying to remember the right cues, hoping I would not forget what to say. But underneath the nerves, I knew I was exactly where I wanted to be.
That experience shaped everything about how we approach coaching at Trinity. Today, one of the things we are most proud of is that coaching here is not just about sets, reps, and workouts. It is about helping people build confidence, improve their health, and create a better life through training. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, and it is the standard we bring to every fitness coaching internship we run.
Introducing the Trinity Coach Internship Program
We are excited to continue developing our Trinity Coach Internship Program. Right now and over the coming months, a number of aspiring coaches will be joining our team as interns. They will shadow sessions, lead warm-ups, coach movements, conduct assessments, and gradually take on more responsibility under the guidance of our coaching team. This is not about handing someone a whistle and hoping for the best. Every intern follows a structured development pathway that covers the Trinity coaching system, our programming philosophy, communication and leadership skills, movement assessments, program design, and what it actually takes to build a sustainable coaching career.
We believe great coaches are not born — they are developed through education, practice, feedback, and experience. According to research on coach development, mentorship is a key component of professional growth in strength and conditioning — and one that is not widely enough applied or effectively utilized. That is the foundation this fitness coaching internship is built on.
What We Look for in a Trinity Coach
The coaches we bring into Trinity all share something important: they have the right values and the right reasons for wanting to coach. They genuinely care about helping people improve their lives. Skills can be taught, but character, curiosity, and a desire to serve others are what we look for first. Our goal is not simply to create coaches who can run a session. We want to develop professionals who understand how to help members succeed and who embody what makes Trinity a place people want to come back to.
As part of our community at our gym in Long Island City, you play a role in this journey too. You will likely see interns asking questions, observing sessions, and occasionally coaching parts of classes. We encourage you to introduce yourself and support them. Every great coach started somewhere, and many of the coaches you know today were once in the exact same position.
A Clear Pathway Into Fitness Coaching
For anyone considering a career in health and fitness, this program creates a clear pathway from intern to coach. There are opportunities for mentorship, coaching hours, and potential employment within Trinity for those who demonstrate the right skills, attitude, and values. A fitness coaching internship at Trinity is designed to be the kind of opportunity I was lucky enough to get in 2017 — structured, supported, and genuinely career-changing for the right person.
Someone took a chance on me back then. This program is our way of doing the same for the next generation. If you know someone who might be the right fit, or if you are curious about what the pathway looks like, we would love to have that conversation. Book a free intro session at Trinity Gym NYC and come talk to us about it.
Have a great weekend.
