How I Became a Morning Person (and How You Can Too)

Early morning fitness mindset, person preparing gym clothes with alarm clock and water bottle on nightstand for a successful workout

In 2014, I worked in Dublin with Bank of Ireland. It was a Finance Graduate Job straight out of college.

Start time? 9:00 a.m. …ish.

I was always in the door at 8:57 a.m. — after hitting the snooze button 13 times, rolling into the shower, throwing on boxer shorts (usually backwards), and stumbling out the door with a moody head from the late night before.

I hated mornings. I wasn’t a “morning person”—not even close.

That is… until a good friend gave me a serious wake-up call. And I quote: “Stop being such an ignorant pr**k in the mornings.” 😆

It stung—but it worked. Slowly, I began to change my attitude.

Mornings Aren’t Magic — They’re Built

Let’s be real—early mornings aren’t always sunshine and motivation. Your bed feels like heaven. Your alarm feels like betrayal.

But here’s the truth: liking mornings isn’t a personality trait—it’s a habit. One that you can build, just like strength in the gym.

The trick? Your morning starts the night before.

How to Win the Morning: Build the Night Before

Winning your morning isn’t just about setting an alarm. It’s about setting yourself up to want to get out of bed and own your day.

Start with these simple steps:

  • Go to bed at the same time each night (consistency is everything)
  • Lay your clothes out the night before (no thinking required)
  • Prep your gym gear: shoes, water bottle, playlist—ready to go
  • Get off your phone 30 minutes earlier (scrolling = late nights)

Your nighttime routine is the quiet MVP of morning success.

Early Mornings = Power Moves

When you show up early, you’re ahead of the day. You’re not reacting—you’re leading.

And trust me, you don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Just try one early morning workout per week. Build your routine around it. Then do it again.

Mornings aren’t just for the lucky or the naturally chipper.

They’re for the prepared.

And once you start winning your mornings, you’ll start winning your days. And that’s where real momentum begins.
