Plan the Work, Work the Plan”: The Secret to Long-Term Fitness Success

Beginner swimmer training with a coach symbolizing consistency and progress at a fitness studio in Long Island City

At the beginning of this year, I made a commitment that had eluded me for years—I decided to finally learn how to swim properly.

Like many of us, I had set this goal before. And like many of us, I had let it fade away once the initial motivation wore off. Usually within a few weeks, I’d find myself skipping sessions, making excuses, and eventually forgetting about the goal altogether.

But this year, I decided to approach it differently. And in doing so, I learned a lesson that applies directly to your fitness journey—whether you’re trying to get stronger, healthier, or more consistent with your routine.

Step 1: Get a Coach

The first thing I did was get myself a coach. Not just for the expertise, but for the accountability. Having someone guide me, correct my form, and expect me to show up each week made all the difference.

At The Trinity NYC, our personal trainers do exactly that. Whether you’re completely new to exercise or returning after a break, having support makes sticking to your plan so much easier.

Step 2: Set a Real Goal

I also set myself a goal that involved swimming. Not just “learn to swim”—but something tangible that I could aim toward. That goal gave my efforts structure. A reason to keep showing up.

Sound familiar? That’s exactly how we help members set clear goals inside our group fitness and personal training programs. Real goals lead to real results.

Five Months Later: I’m Still Swimming

Am I ready for the Olympics? Absolutely not. But I’m still going. I’m still learning. And most importantly—I’m better than I was when I started.

This week, my coach dropped a golden line that’s stuck with me ever since:

“Plan the work, work the plan.”

That might just be the six words that change everything for you, too.

How to Apply This to Your Fitness Journey

✅ Plan the Work

It doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it shouldn’t be.

  • “I’ll walk for 20 minutes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.”
  • “I’ll join a beginner strength class twice a week.”
  • “I’ll ask a coach if I’m unsure what to do.”

Simple, clear, actionable. That’s your plan.

✅ Work the Plan

Then comes the harder part: show up. Follow through. Work the plan—especially on days you don’t feel like it.

That’s where transformation lives—not in motivation, but in consistency.
