Back in April 2020 — which somehow feels like a full decade ago — I ran a weekly Zoom workout for friends and family. Some were in the U.S., most back home in Ireland. It was our way of staying sane and staying connected.
Every week, my brother joined. And every week, he was late.
Not because he didn’t care. Not because he wasn’t trying. But because it was smack in the middle of bedtime for his kids. And as any parent will tell you — bedtime with young children is a lawless, unpredictable event 😂
Each workout was 30 minutes. One week, he showed up 22 minutes late. That gave him a grand total of 8 minutes to train. He didn’t even grab a kettlebell — just picked up the kids’ pram and used that as a weight 😆
He worked hard for those 8 minutes. He broke a sweat. And at the end, he turned to the camera and said, “Thanks for that Shay — I feel great. Doing something is better than doing nothing.”
Why Short Workouts for Busy People Make a Difference
That phrase stuck with me. Because it’s true. Short workouts for busy people are not a compromise — they’re a strategy. Life isn’t always going to give you a full hour, a perfect window, or a quiet gym floor. Sometimes you’ve just got 8 minutes. And sometimes, that’s enough.
I say this as someone who now coaches fitness for a living — but used to work long hours on Wall Street. Back then, early mornings and late nights were just part of the job. I had to get creative with time. A 20-minute lift before sunrise? Worth it. A brisk walk on a lunch break? Absolutely. Five minutes of mobility before bed? Game-changing.
You Don’t Need an Hour. You Need Momentum.
The biggest barrier to consistency isn’t motivation. It’s perfectionism.
We tell ourselves, “If I can’t do the full workout, I won’t do anything.” So we skip it. Again and again.
But the real secret? Something is always better than nothing. A 10-minute sweat session clears your head. A 15-minute walk lowers your stress. Three rounds of bodyweight circuits can shift your entire mood.
It all counts. Because it builds momentum. And once you’ve got momentum, the next session gets easier.
Break the All-or-Nothing Mindset
Fitness isn’t about perfect weeks — it’s about patterns. It’s about doing what you can, when you can, and trusting that small, consistent efforts stack up.
Let go of the “ideal workout” and embrace the real one — the one that fits in your messy, busy, beautiful life. You might surprise yourself with what you can get done in a short window.
And you’ll definitely feel better for doing something.
