Watering Yourself Consistently: A Lesson From a Plant

Watering yourself consistently is the simplest way I know to describe what good health actually requires — and a plant in our gym taught me that better than anything I could have planned. A few months ago one of our members, Jessie, brought a plant into Trinity. It did not take long before it became part of the gym. Sitting in the corner, quietly watching classes, slowly becoming one of the more low-maintenance members we have. Jessie took great pride in looking after it. Every week she would check on it, give it some water, make sure it was healthy. Over time the plant grew taller, greener, and stronger. It was not doing anything spectacular. It was simply benefiting from consistent care.

Then summer arrived. Jessie was heading away on vacation, which meant she needed someone to take over the important responsibility of plant care. She chose Coach Francesco. Her instructions could not have been clearer. Two cups of water every Thursday. Simple enough. Nobody else was allowed to touch it. “Only the Italian,” Jessie said. The only thing is, Francesco himself admitted he would struggle to keep a plastic plant alive.

Watering Yourself Consistently: What a Plant Taught Us

For the next few weeks we would occasionally glance over and ask whether the plant had got its two cups that week. Some weeks it did. Some weeks, well, the plant looked like it had also gone on vacation. Little by little it lost some of its colour and it definitely was not thriving the way it had been before. Then Jessie returned. She did not panic. She did not throw the plant away or decide that plants just were not for her. She simply went back to doing what she had always done. She watered it. Consistently. And almost immediately the plant began responding. New growth appeared, the leaves became healthier, and before long it was looking like itself again.

Watching this unfold was a reminder that our health is not all that different. Our bodies respond to consistent care. Not heroic effort. Not one perfect week. Not one killer workout. Just regular attention, repeated over time. When we exercise regularly, eat nutritious food, get enough sleep, and take care of ourselves, we grow stronger. The changes often happen so gradually we barely notice them — but they are happening all the same.

When Life Interrupts the Routine

Then life gets busy. Summer arrives. Vacations happen. Schedules change. Kids are home from school. The routine gets interrupted and suddenly we convince ourselves we have undone months of hard work. The truth is, we usually have not. We have simply stopped watering ourselves for a little while. According to research on habit formation, the identity and progress built through consistent effort is far more durable than a few missed weeks suggest. The roots are still there. The foundation does not disappear.

At our gym in Long Island City we see this every September. Members come back after summer and apologise for being away, convinced they have lost everything. Within two or three sessions they remember that the body holds onto far more than they expected. The work they did before the break was not wasted. It was stored. Watering yourself consistently does not mean never missing a week — it means coming back when you do.

Pick Up the Watering Can Again

Just like Jessie’s plant, the answer when things slip is not to give up because of a few inconsistent weeks. It is to pick up the watering can again. Come back to class. Go for a walk. Cook one healthy meal. Get a good night’s sleep. Small actions, repeated consistently, are what help us grow. Your health does not expect perfection. It simply asks for your attention, one day at a time.

If you have missed a few workouts recently, do not worry about where you left off. Your roots are still there. If you are ready to start watering yourself again — book a free intro call. Come back in and let’s pick up where you left off.

Have a great weekend.
