This past week, I was lucky enough to spend a lot of quality time with my 1-year-old nephew. I even brought him for a visit to The Trinity NYC—the best gym in Long Island City—where he had a blast trying to pick up dumbbells, carrying medicine balls, and even tripping over a rowing machine! 😆
Reflecting on this time together, I realized: there’s a lot we can learn from babies and toddlers when it comes to our own fitness journey.
Lessons from a 1-Year-Old: Resilience, Curiosity, and Growth
Ever watch a 1-year-old tackle life?
They fall—a lot. They wobble, trip, bonk their heads, and somehow… they always get back up.
At no point does a 1-year-old say:
“Maybe walking just isn’t for me. Guess I’ll stick to crawling forever.”
Nope. They giggle, cry, and keep trying—again and again—until they master it.
Your fitness journey, whether you’re starting personal training or trying a group fitness class, works the same way.
4 Fitness Lessons You Can Steal from a 1-Year-Old
🔹 Fall Down, Get Up. Repeat.
You’ll have off days. Missed workouts. Maybe even setbacks. That’s not the end—it’s part of the process. Like a toddler learning to walk, your only job is to get back up and keep going.
🔹 Celebrate the Small Wins
First steps are huge. So is adding 5 lbs to your squat, choosing a salad over fast food, or simply showing up to the gym even when you’re tired. Every small win builds momentum.
🔹 Stay Curious and Playful
Kids don’t dread practice. They explore and enjoy it. Bring that mindset into your fitness studio sessions. Play with movement, try new challenges, and have fun with your workouts.
🔹 You’re Closer Than You Think
Progress feels slow… until one day, you realize how far you’ve come. Consistency beats speed. Trust that every small effort is moving you closer to your “walking moment.”
Keep Wobbling Forward—You’re Doing Better Than You Think
Fitness isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up, trying again, and trusting the process.
At The Trinity NYC, our coaches are here to help you through every stumble, every win, and every milestone. Whether you’re new to personal training or looking to join a supportive group fitness community, we’ve got your back.
So keep wobbling. Keep trying. Your best is yet to come.
