What It Really Means to Be Rich (And Why It Has Nothing to Do with Money)

What Does It Mean to Be Rich?

I listened to a podcast recently that made me realize something: I’m a very wealthy man.

Not in the yachts-and-private-jets sense. Not in the 8-figure bank account sense either. But in the way that really matters — in the kind of wealth you can feel in your bones.

The presenter on the podcast said something that stuck: a thousand things can make you happy for a moment, but true contentment comes from within.

It got me thinking. What does it mean to be rich? Because the world would have you believe it’s all fast cars and designer clothes. But that’s not the kind of richness that lasts.

Redefining Wealth: It’s Not About Money

From where I stand, being rich has very little to do with money — and everything to do with the things you can’t swipe a card for.

I’ve met people with overflowing bank accounts who feel hollow. And I’ve met people with modest means who wake up every day overflowing with joy, connection, and purpose.

Here’s what being rich really means to me:

  • Health – The ability to move freely, breathe deeply, and live pain-free. Wealth is waking up energized, not dragging your body like it’s a burden.
  • Family & Friends – A tight hug. A shared laugh. People who show up for you without being asked — whether you’re moving house or just having a rough day.
  • Community – A sense of belonging. A place where your name matters. People who cheer for your wins and lift you through your lows.
  • Freedom – To spend your time doing what you love. To say yes to adventure and no to anything that drains you.
  • Hobbies – Time to explore, play, and create — for no other reason than it lights you up.

Sure, money can help. It can buy convenience. It can open doors. It can give you short-term joy. But it can’t buy meaning. It can’t buy peace. It can’t buy a truly rich life.

If You’ve Got These, You’re Already Wealthy

We’re all taught to chase more — more income, more prestige, more possessions. But maybe what we really need is to appreciate what’s already in front of us.

If you’re healthy…
If you’ve got even a couple of solid people in your corner…
If you’ve got the freedom to move, to laugh, to rest, and to try again tomorrow…

You’re already rich.

And if you’re reading this thinking, “But I don’t feel that way right now” — that’s okay too. Because the best thing about this kind of wealth? You can grow it from wherever you are.

You can build strength. You can rebuild relationships. You can reconnect to your values. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about starting where you are, with what you’ve got.
